Follies of Summer: Where Were You in 1962?

Follies of Summer (American Graffiti is a 1973 film, the second long directed by George Lucas. It was filmed in the format of Techniscope, which writes the image of that grainy appearance of a 16 mm-only in format wide-screen for the film. I pulled together some images from the movie, vivid colors and as a jukebox, because they illustrate very well oestilo of youth in 1962.

Follies of Summer Where Were You in 1962

The story of the movie is about the separation of a group of friends because the two go away to university. It is said that each one of the characters was based on one aspect of the youth of George Lucas. In the beginning, he was the unsafe “Teddy the Toad”. After, he had a stage vying for cracks, as well as John. As he finished high school, also had to decide if I was in the city or went to a university, such as Steve and Kurt. Completing the life story, enters the special participation of the disk jockey Wolfman Jack, the radio broadcaster that George was listening as a young man.

Innovations Follies of Summer

The soundtrack of Crazy Summer is one of the best of all time, with 41 songs of pure rock’ n ‘ roll. The soundtrack in the film is common today, but at the time it was difficult for the studio to accept a movie only with music, “old-fashioned”. This film was one of the first to buy the record labels the right to use the songs of famous artists to pack the scenes. Until then, it was more common for the film to have a soundtrack of its own, instrumental, or sung in the case of a musical.

Another innovative aspect is the film does not have a protagonist, well-defined, preferring to tell four stories simultaneous. Another thing that is common today, but that the studio executives have cost to accept in 1973.

The plot and style!

The movie takes place in 1962, in California. Everything that young people do revolves around the culture of “cruising”, a ritual of American youth that can drive much before entering a bar. Cruising, the main social activity, was to get out of the car with friends to search girls. Has a lot car of the 50s!

The story begins with two young men: one goes and another one that is. The entire film has a tone of farewell to adolescence. Young people leaving home to begin his adult life. The boys and the girls from the movie they live this phase of life in a time when well-specific to the United States, drawing a parallel between this goodbye to the youth and the cultural break that the United States passed at the time

Well, as this is a blog about style, let’s talk about some of the iconic images!

·         Essential style college American:

Chinos, shirts, button-down, madras, shoe, penny loafer, shoes fabric and shoes “white bucks”

The blonde in the Ford T-Bird 56, Susan Summers.

·         The little band, alternately playing typical of the era playing red blazer and hair pompadour.

Everybody dancing half. A “sock off”

·         Mackenzie Phillips, in the role of Julie, wearing a t-shirt from the surfer Dewey Weber.

Print amazing!

·         Terry “The Toad”

Glasses in fashion and the cutting of hair in the most ridiculous of the story

·         Kurt and the group greaser The Pharaos

Kurt is played by Richard Dreyfuss, who later would win the oscar in Girl Goodbye and estrelaria Shark and Immediate Contacts of the Third Degree.

·         Young Harrison Ford

At the time it was a “carpenteiro of success” about to turn Han Solo and Indiana Jones

Chevy 55 Ford Coupe 62

·         Wolfman Jack, the voice of the radio

The relationship between the radio and the people is one of the most interesting of the film.

·         T-shirt and Levi’s!

A pair of pants so you find the Levis Vintage Clothing.

Crazy Summer was written only 10 years after the time that passes, but a lot has happened in the world in that range. The assassination of JFK, the end of the Beatles, journey to the moon, summer of love and the culture hippie, outside the Vietnam war that was coming. The rock’ n ‘ roll and the music, the themes so central to the movie, also went through changes in time: the invasion of the rock british.

Taking all this into consideration, the movie also represents the end of a period in the USA. The output of a colored backdrop, with a certain innocence of the baby boomers and the entry of a period of uncertainty and transformations. Super recommended… at least of the style and the music I’m sure you will like it!
